2025 SUMMER KITTE / KITTE Marunouchi / Spatial Sound Design / 2025
Sound as ambient choreography — shaping a public atrium through resonance, subtle motion, and spatial atmosphere.
Spatial sound design for the lantern-themed summer installation presented in the atrium of KITTE Marunouchi.
The project approached sound as an environmental layer that would envelop the entire space without competing with the strong visual presence of the lantern light. Rather than pushing sound into the foreground, the design focused on how the space itself could feel differently inhabited through a restrained sonic presence.
Because the atrium is both reflective and constantly in transition, the work paid particular attention to how sound resonates, spreads, and settles in the space. Localization and reverberance were carefully controlled so the installation could remain atmospheric without becoming intrusive.
Alongside the continuous ambient sound from 16:00 to 23:00, special performances took place at 10, 30, and 50 minutes past each hour. These moments introduced shifts in which sound expanded through and gathered within the atrium, creating a temporal structure that responded to the flicker of light and the rhythm of the lanterns. The aim was to position the experience between symbolic presence and environmental subtlety — something that would not interrupt everyday use, yet could still make people pause.
